Sun Sentinel: Campbell to seek AG post

Senator Skip Campbell who has been rumored on several occasions in the past to run for statewide office, and who seriously flirted with running for U.S. Senate will run for Attorney General next year according to this morning's Sun Sentinel. Campbell (D-Coral Springs) is term limited in 2006.

Campbell will be a great candidate. He's one of the most accomplished legislators and lawyers in the state.

Skip Campbell is one of the most influential State Senators -- Republican and Democratic -- in Tallahassee.

Skip is quick, intelligent and can communicate well. He is a leading voice on the issue of government privatization and joined with Rod Smith in helping to stop some bad tort reform legislation during the past session. He also fought for justice for those employees who get hurt and need workers compensation.

I could go on and on but the bottom line is that Skip is a first-rate public servant and he will be dynamic in a debate.

I think Skip is great, but he has two major issues that could sink his campaign.

First, he was a sponsor of the bill that called for the largest telephone rate increase in Florida history. He will have a tough time arguing that he will fight for the people against the big corporations because of that one.

Second, he was the sponsor of the bill that required women who are giving up children for adoption and can't prove paternity to publish a list of all their sexual partners in the newspaper.

Like I said, I think Skip is a great senator, but if he is going to have a chance in this race, he needs to address these two issues immediately and define himself in relation to them. He can't just wait and hope that the GOP will forget about them because they won't.

Talk about a Democrat we'd LOVE to run against! This guy has so many bad votes- trust me, you guys need to find a less controversial candidate.

Barry E:

Ron Klein over Skip - come on, that's illy. Klein is a nice guy but has no charisma and doesn't have the right profile to win over north florida voters.

Skip is a great speak, overall good guy and a dynamic candidate. His weakness as pointed out by others is he has some tough votes to overcome he was the sponsor of the phone bill, the lands bill that the enviromentalists hated, etc.

Ron Klein would have jumped into this race months ago if he were interested. He would be a very regional candidate. He is extremly strong in south Palm Beach County but disliked by the Democrats in the Northern part of the county. He'd probably have been strong in Broward and possibly parts of Miami-Dade but not really anywhere else.

The key for Campbell will be to do well in Orlando and Tampa. Those two media markets will need to be saturated.
